You've probably seen it happen: two shirts, both printed months apart, both washed the same number of times, but one still looks flawless while the other has spidery cracks running through the design. It's not bad luck.

Whether a print cracks comes down to a handful of very specific factors: the printing method, the ink or transfer material used, how it was cured, the fabric underneath, and how it's washed afterward. Let's break down what's really going on.

It Starts With the Printing Method

Not all prints are created equal, and some methods are simply more crack-resistant by nature.


Printing Method

Screen printing (plastisol ink) sits on top of the fabric as a layer of cured ink. Done right, with proper curing temperature, it can last for years. Done with under-cured ink (a common shortcut to save time), the ink stays soft and gummy underneath and will crack and peel much faster because it never fully bonded to the fabric.

DTF (Direct-to-Film) transfers use a heat-applied film with an adhesive layer. Quality DTF prints are known for being flexible and durable, but cheap film, low-quality adhesive powder, or a heat press that's too cool or applied too briefly will leave a print that lifts and cracks at the edges within weeks.

Sublimation doesn't crack at all in the traditional sense, because the ink is dyed directly into the polyester fibers rather than sitting on the surface. This is one reason sublimation is the go-to for jerseys and activewear that get stretched constantly.

Embroidery doesn't crack either, since it's stitched thread rather than printed ink, though threads can fray or loosen over time if the stitch density or backing is wrong.

The Real Culprit: Curing and Heat Application

Even with the right method, cracking usually traces back to one thing: the print wasn't cured properly. Screen print ink needs to reach a specific internal temperature (not just surface temperature) for long enough to fully bond with the fabric. DTF and heat transfer vinyl need the correct pressure, temperature, and dwell time from the heat press. Skip any of these, and the print might look perfect on day one, then start failing the moment it goes through a wash cycle or gets stretched.

This is exactly why cheaper, rushed printing jobs tend to crack faster: it's not that the ink itself is worse, it's that the curing process was cut short to speed up turnaround.

Fabric and Fit Matter More Than You'd Think

A print that sits on a stiff, non-stretch cotton tee behaves very differently from the same print on a stretchy polyester-blend jersey. Ink and transfer films have a limited amount of flex before they start to crack.

If the garment stretches more than the print can handle, think tight-fitting shirts, activewear, or anything that gets pulled and stretched during wear, the print is under constant stress every time it's worn. Over time, that repeated flexing is what creates those fine crack lines, especially across high-movement areas like the chest, shoulders, and underarms.

How You Wash and Dry It Makes a Real Difference

Even a perfectly printed and cured design can crack early if it's cared for the wrong way. The most common culprits:

Wash & Dry

  • High heat drying softens ink and adhesive layers, making them more prone to cracking as they cool and harden again unevenly

  • Ironing directly on the print melts and distorts the ink surface

  • Turning the garment inside out before washing protects the print from friction and folding

  • Washing in cold water and skipping the dryer significantly extends how long a print stays intact

So, Which Prints Really Last the Longest?

If long-term durability without any risk of cracking is the priority, especially for sportswear or anything that gets stretched, sublimation is the most crack-proof option, since there's no surface layer to crack in the first place.

For designs on cotton or blended fabric, a properly cured screen print or high-quality DTF transfer can last just as long with the right aftercare. The print method matters, but how it's made and how it's treated afterward matters just as much.
