Why Do Zippers Get Stuck, and How to Fix It Without Breaking Them?

A stuck zipper is one of those small annoyances that can ruin a good outfit in seconds. But zippers rarely break on their own, most of the time, something specific is causing the jam, and knowing what it is makes the fix a lot easier.

What's actually happening

A zipper works through a slider that pulls two rows of teeth (or coils, for fabric zippers) together or apart. When it jams, it's almost always one of three things: fabric caught between the teeth, misaligned teeth from being pulled too fast or at an angle, or corrosion and dirt buildup that stops the slider from gliding smoothly.

Forcing a stuck zipper usually makes things worse, you risk bending the teeth permanently or snapping the slider itself, which is a much harder (and pricier) fix than the original jam.

How to fix it, depending on the cause

If fabric is caught in the teeth, gently pull the fabric back through in the direction it came from, rather than continuing to pull the zipper forward. A pin or tweezers can help ease the fabric out without tearing it.

If the teeth look bent or misaligned, use pliers to very gently realign them back into position before trying to move the slider again. Small movements, don't force it.

If the zipper feels stiff or gritty rather than physically stuck, it's likely dirt or corrosion. Rubbing a bit of graphite (from a pencil), candle wax, or bar soap along the teeth can lubricate it enough to glide smoothly again.

Preventing it in the first place

Zippers last longer when they're pulled straight up or down rather than at an angle, and when fabric is kept clear of the track before zipping. Cheaper zippers also tend to jam more often simply because the teeth are less precisely cut, so the slider has less margin for error.
